Heating System Operation

Inspection of heating system operation

Location of furnace/burner: -- In the garage -- In the attic -- Other …

Home heating system

Picture above shows the vertical furnace in the attic. It is in good shape, properly supported under the furnace. Notice that furnace sits on the support material rather than touching the attic floor. Vent pipe goes straight upward. Insulation material touching the furnace on the right side is not appropriate.

Vent pipes should go through the roof structure and terminate above the roof with some clearance.

Two vent pipes in photograph above go through the sheating. The one on the left was taped and secured much better than the one (plumbing vent pipe) on the right side. Notice that sheetrock on the upper left was patched. This is not acceptable. One solid piece would, of course, provide better fire protection.

Furnace/Burner Flames: -- Appears normal (blue color) -- Not normal (yellow/orange color --> Adjustment needed.

This particular furnace above replaced a furnace causing fires in the past. The homeowner did not know about the problem and recall by the manufacturer.
